  • Sweetcorn.

I have been growing my sweetcorn on the windowsill, and then hardening them of before planting them in a sheltered sunny part of my veg patch. Has anyone any hints, tips for their continued growth.
    Thanks
    Simon

18" apart, although mine is 6" ! (You choose). Plant them so the leaves are pointing East - West. Easy Peasy.

    Cheers, Tony.

It will depend on the variety.

I'm growing Minipop (purely for baby corn), which I'll plant 6ins apart (18ins between rows), because they don't need to be pollinated. If you're after proper sweetcorn the spacings need to be much bigger.

If possible, plant them in a block rather than rows to aid pollination.

I've planted mine out at 12" spacings this year. Before I did it at 7.5" and it worked fine. Lower cobs were quite small though and only partially pollinated.

If it's a windy site you might need to earth them up as they grow until they're large enough to take the force of the wind. Any that are knocked over can be put back up right and will be fine (unless snapped obviously!)

I had 4 old seeds from a previous packet (Prelude) which I planted in the polytunnel, so as to avoid cross-pollination with the variet I've planted outdoors. They're growing well, but one has got what looks like a new plant sprouting out of the bottom. Should I pinch this off or will it bear a further cob maybe?

Its another cob growing Vince so I'd leave it. There don't always fill out but given plenty of sun & water you never know.

Mine have ceased growning since transplanting in the raised bed

They have plenty of sun (when it decides to come out) and lots of water.
I've been waiting to feed them fish blood & bone but according to the instructions, I've to wait until it's not raining.

Ooh, this is a new one on me. Any idea why? Does this mean cobs form on each side rather than the back, therefore getting equal sunlight?
Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you are probably right.
