    Sweetcorn Growth!

    Just wanted to share this with you.

    Its my first year growing stuff and im utterly amazed how fast this sweetcorn is growing

    This picture was taken on the 24th June, you can see the sweetcorn at the front barely out the soil



    This picture was taken today just 5 weeks later, its now well over 6 foot tall.

      We live in an area where a huge amount of maize is grown, and it always astounds me both how early they sow it, considering that it is vulnerable to frost, and like you, the way it rockets up to 6 or 7 feet in height. I think it is grown mainly as cattle fodder here as they harvest the entire plant and don't seem to bother too much with the cobs themselves, though if you 'scrump' some early cobs, they are sufficiently sweet to eat as corn on the cob while waiting for our own sweetcorn to ripen.

        You post has really encouraged me to grow sweetcorn next year!!
        I was a little put off as my father in law said they take up a lot of room. What sized pot & how many per pot did you sown?
        Love the trays on the seed roof!

          Natalie, I grew ours on a small strip of lawn, dug over as a temporary thing. Best thing I ever did.
          If you have to grow in pots, the biggest and fairly deepest you can get manage. Their roots anchor them into the ground to prevent them falling over. They need to be about a foot between them as well
          . Our council uses plastic recycling bags and I reckon two in each would be ok.
          Try and do them, I grew mine from seed and those little grass stalks on my bathroom windowsill didn't fail to amaze me

            I could grow them at the side of the greenhouse next year just don't want them to grow too tall and block the sunlight. How any cobs grow per plant & how tall do they grow. I would only been myself and maybe my Mum & Dad eating them. So i don't want to plant too many,
            I've bought some seeds called Bodacious F1 10P from Wilko!!

              I grew 11 I think, 6 in the back row and five in the front, I got two cobs off each. They freeze so well, got two out last night, 4 mins in microwave with leaves still on.
              I have promised myself that there will be two cobs left for Christmas.
              I will confess on here if that doesnt work lol.
              We used Swift F1 from Wilkos and they were about 6' tall

                Just looked up your seeds Natalie, they sound fantastic. Seven foot tall. I would def give them a go

                  They were a right bargain. Got a few other seeds mostly Johnsons. Sweet Peppers, Leeks, Carrots & Spring Onions. Its worth having a look in your local store.
                  I can wait for next year!

                    Looked at my sweetcorn again trying to imagine a greenhouse behind them. I think you def be ok, there's not tons of leaves on them, sun got through from my front row to back ones ok.
                    One thing I would do differently next year is stagger the seed sowing. It would be nice if I still had some growing now

                      I stagger mine Sally and like me you are in the South. I have picked my May sowing, June sowing will ready in 3 weeks and July's end of Sept
