  • Sowing and Growing on Leeks

I have sown some leeks in standard sized seed trays and just wondered whether you just leave them in this after thinning until they are pencil sized and then plant out or do you transplant them to deeper pots once germinated and then plant out once large enough.

I'm just wondering whether leaving them in a seed tray (which seem to be quite shallow - 2 inches approx) would restrict their growth if left until (is it?) April/May time before planting.

Hi i just sprinkle a load of seeds in a medium sized flower pot and let them grow they will be tall and thin(say pencil length) then just seperate when you plant out no need to thin whist in the pot so simple and no messing or wastage

This will be my first time growing leeks & I was going to try sowing them in loo roll inners as I thought that a regular seed tray would be too shallow???

I have been told that modules are fine for leeks as you can plant them out quite quickly.

Save your loo roll inners for veg with a long roots or those which don't like their roots disturbed - e.g. parsnips, peas, beans.

If you have not grown leek's before grow them until they are about 6 inch's tall ,
Then you prepare ground and if you have a decent dibber make a row of hole's about 4 inch's deep get the plant's cut of half of the root's and a third of the leave's put the plant in the hole and fill the hole with water making sure that the plant do's not float it sound a bit cruel but it do's work....jacob

im growing leeks too. i have them in the plastic modules that fit in to the propagator, 24 cells i think. I was just going to thin them out a bit as the seeds were to small to handle, and leave until big enough to plant out.

I've sown mine today, now I read somewhere (bbc?) to put 6 seeds to a module. Now do I thin? Or just plant them out as they germinate?

Cupcake: just follow this and you'll not go far wrong. The leeks will push each other apart and when you are ready, just separate them as per...
