  • Sowing carrots now??!!

I remember a longish thread back in August about wether it was too late to sow carrots. I think the consensus was that it was a bit late. I just bought some Nantes Frubund fast crop and it says they can be sown in October. Anyone else ever done this? I was thinking of chucking some in a bucket and seeing what happens. Any thoughts?

What is there to lose? Carrot seed is usually pretty inexpensive. There is an article in this month's GYO mag about sowing carrots but I haven't read it properly yet. I would say bung them in, keep them protected and see what comes up. Don't forget to use slug control of some type as they will vanish without trace otherwise.

would it be possible to sow carrots in pots and grow them in the greenhouse over the winter months?

Last year my mum grew some over winter in a heated (just frost free) greenhouse, they grew but were not terribly big by spring.

Carrots do not like being moved. Against gardening lore I have tried to move and replant carrot seedlings and the results were pathetic. As carrot seed loses its viability quickly it may be worth trying any left over seed in troughs or deep pots in the greenhouse, For the seed to germinate you will need a mild/warm spell.

I sow carrots and potatoes about this time in old compost bags and stand them in the greenhouse out of the frosts and always get reasonable crops it sees us through the winter. I also grow lettuce, beans and any other left over seeds I may have. I have a small parafin heater which keeps the frosts off. This year I have started some onions off in cells to see if I can get an early crop next year. I also grow some extra chard and spinach in large pots as the chooks will have it away with it in the veg patch when all the grass and weeds stop growing over the winter.
