  • Something's eating my root vegetables :(

First it was the carrots, a few feathery leaves one day and then nothing the next day. Last weekend, I planted 10 big chunky celeriacs out, went to look tonight and it was all decimated. Have a few more growing up in the greenhouse so not too bad on that front. The onions are also being eaten at the base.

Having been on a late night slug hunt and found a few, I'm still not entirely convinced it can be just slugs? or do I blame everything on them?

Nothing germinated this week as well, so not having a good week

Re the carrots, it could be carrot root fly. Try planting in tandem with tagates. Other types of marigodls work with other plants, but I am not sure which goes with which.

Carrot flies don't eat carrots until there are carrots to eat. It will be slugs.

Could be birds - esp pigeons. They like the feathery foliage - they're also pretty keen on Florence fennel for the same reason.

my slugs haven't touched the celeriac, but maybe they just prefer the lettuce

Yup, went slug hunting and found an amazing variety of slugs. We have teeny ones, large ones bigger than yer average garden snail and all sorts in between sizes.

Guess I do have a slug problem after all.

Definitely not slugs. My place is absolutely overriden by them.I planted some lettuce(I had oo many anyway)and it was munched away in 2 nights.Celeriacs are sitting in the ground (neighbouring bed)over 2 weeks and slugs don't touch them.I have nice, healthy sturdy plants without a bite from slugs.Another thing against slugs-celeriac is related to parsley, slugs don't eat parsley-last year they ate all dill growing beside parsley but didn't touch parsley.Check out for any other beasties.
