Yeah, they're lovely and quick. Just watch out for slugs.

I thought of that but can't find the thread about the slug repellant, it's something to do with chicken grit I was reading it last night

Know the feeling, my broccolli, thyme and leek seeds have all started to grow in my shed and my mixed leaf salad and rocket are now growing in the garden: Like you say it makes it so worth while. I am wondering what to do about slugs they are horrid critters, i have been paying my 10 year old 50p a night to dispose of them If you find something effective please let me know.

I'm currently using crushed eggshell around the plants and so far it's ok. Every now and again it needs a fresh top up as water makes the shells disappear into the soil surface and lose it's efficiency. (It's the prickliness that keeps the slugs away.)
Last year I used sand (horticultural grade - less harmful salts) around the lettuce and it worked! I have sand around some of the veggies too.
