A part of my veg plot is almost always in shade because of some large trees, can anyone sugest what could be planted here

gooseberry and rhubarb, how about some herbs, if you get some sun try kale, beetroot, kohl rabi. Hope this helps.Geordie

Spinach? Mine did really well last year in the gloomy damp weather
How close are the trees? Their root system is as large as the part above ground, and they suck a lot of moisture out of the soil. If the ground is dry as well as shady, you might struggle to grow anything there.Comment

I've got exactly the same problem. I just get a small amount of dappled sun but spinach (as mentioned) lettuce, raddishes and runner beans all did fine.
Would potatoes grow in the shade?

I used my twirly washing line thingwee to hang backets on and stacked trays on short planks on the top to maximise light in the shady area of my garden. Unfortunately I overburdened it, and the ground spike wasn't enough to support it. I have a bigger one which I am going to 'plant' in a bucket of cement and bury.
Also used those hanging basket cascade tree thingwees with veggies on the top and flowers hanging from the veggie baskets. This raised the stuff up to the light away from the shade cast by the north facing fence.If a thing's worth doing, it's worth doing to excessComment
