Hi Pottypotter

I'm not sure about strawberries as I've never tried them from seed. My pepper seeds usually take up to 10 days to germinate. Bit cold at the mo tho!

Hi Pottypotter, agree with Squash Muppet about peppers, they should take 10-14 days but last year mine took ages to show any signs of life.I grew strawberries from seed once & I nearly gave up on them they took so long, good luck with yours, as S.M. says it may just be a bit too cold & dark for some seeds to get going yet.

And now they're ready for transplanting?

I am growing alpine strawberries from seed. they took about 2 weeks to germinate in the propagator. They are now on the window ledge in a sunny spot but the growth is very very slow. they are probably about 5 weeks old now and still less than 1 cm high

We've had some strawbs growing for a while, they've been in for about 7 weeks, and some more have now just broken the surface, seem to stay small for a very long time too, so dont panic yet!

Hi
done strawberries twice now, they can take about two weeks to show and do stay tiny for ages, I was thinking they would never grow beyond the miniscule, but they do get going in April and it was unbelievable to eat lovely fruit (variety Temptation) through to late September from these same once tiny plants - all in the same year - don't give up!

I sowed my peppers (Sweet Nardello) in polytunnel on 16 Feb - and still no sign. Ditto toms (St Pierre and Gardeners Delight) - no sign there either, although the toms I sowed in a plastic bag on the kitchen window sill are well up after only 14 days)

How far south are you Rednotdead? I managed to get peppers through in the propagator and windowsill but certainly the temperature difference between daytime and nightime in the polytunnel is too great at the moment for any of my seeds.

I sowed alpine strawberries in Jan in a propagator. They have been so slow to put on any growth. At the moment they are still tiny but holding their own... just. Cant imagine getting any fruit this year as they are supposed to do.

I'm in SW Scotland, Jennie - butb agree the differential in temps this last few weeks has been huge (I'm touching mid eighties during the day but it drops really fast at night.)

Having said that I've done really well with leeks, onions, lettuce, cabbage, sweet peas, peas... but I suppose they're that bit hardier ?

Same here Rednotdead with the leeks and onions. Just sowed peas today, so hoping they will germinate well. Been a great day temp wise today in the polytunnel, I was working away in a T-shirt and still sweating, but tonight I see it is falling to around 3 degrees already. The difference in temp must make a difference. I don't think fleece helps either.

I planted some peas and sweet peas into the polytunnel beds the other day - they seem to be holding their own - so far!!
