  • Seed number

Just curious, why do seeds come in so many wildly different numbers in a packet? Does it relate to germination rates? For example I bought Dill this year and it's 2500 seeds. I couldnt possibly use them and I they came with no instructions (from premier seeds on ebay) so I dont really know if I'm supposed to sow 10 for every plant I want or if they just generate a huge amount of seed and thats why they give it.

It comes down to a number of things, I.e. how many seeds are produced per plant, how much effort is put into saving the seeds and of course germination rates! For example you will get less F1 seeds for your money as it will take more effort to save the seed!

Herbs tend to produce lots of seeds - also premier seeds are a very good company (lots of us on here use them) and all of the seeds from them that I have used have had good germination rates.

However to answer your question if you want 10 dill plants sow around 15 seeds just to be sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if all 15 germinated!

Okay, glad to hear they are god but I'd love more information of when and how to sow the seeds! Is the answer just to give a lot of seeds away then? I don't even know if I like dill!
