  • Sage, thyme, lavender, lemon balm & rosemary growing tips?

    Evening all,

I have been generously given the above & I was wondering how best to give these plants the best start in life?

    Many thanks,

    Samuel

p.s also could I put any of the above in the same pot with my young fig tree?

    Hi,

Sage, thyme, lavender & rosemary are probably best not with the fig as they like free draining soil and don't like to sit in water. Think Mediterranean. I don't know about the lemon balm tho. All are relatively easy to propagate so once you get to that stage you can always play about with trial and error. (I am assuming they are small at the moment )

Lemon balm is just like mint, dies back in the winter and spreads itself about a bit. Best kept in a container to restrict the roots.

Just be aware that Lemon balm is invasive and it does better in the ground. I don't think that it is fussy about soil.

unless you are seriously short of space, the only one of these that I would keep in a pot, is the thyme. Rosemary, lavender and sage can grow quite big. Lemon balm is a menace, it takes over the world, tho it does make nice tea and the insects love it.If you grow it, just watch it ......it seems to come up everywhere.
