    Rotting lettuce

    I grew some iceberg lettuces for the first time this year and most of them did very well producing large tight heads but a few started rotting from the inside out. The first signs were some yellowing of the outer leaves but on a closer look, the inside was dark brown and liquifying.
    Anyone know what might cause this?

    heart rot caused by a lack of calcium probably due to irregular watering. An occasional feed with calcium nitrate, the only soluble form of calcium I know of should help prevent the problem

      Or possibly a tiny slug eating its way out from the inside? I get that with cabbages & pak choi

        Same happened with some of mine. I put it down to the rotten weather and MrH forgetting to harvest them and BUYING salad

              Thanks for the replies. I had thought of slugs getting inside but I had slug pellets down throughout and there have hardly been any of them around this year. I think its more likely to be down to the watering - another thing to bear in mind for next year.
