  • Re-using compost

I'm hoping to harvest some bag grown potatoes this weekend and I wondered if I could use the compost that they were grown in to grow more peas?

Also is there aything that should definately not be grown in potato compost.

    Thanks

You could definitely use it to grow lettuce and other shallow rooted salad greens. Peas may well be OK but don't forget that the potatoes will have taken out most of the nutrients. Obviously don't grow tomatoes as they're the same family.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Thanks Alison. If I add well rotted farmyard manure would that make it okay for peas do you think?

Also I have grown some supermarket potaoes that seem to be doing okay. Should I throw away the compost that I used for this or would it be okay to re-use this as well?

Glad you posted this Susie, I was wondering the same thing. I have two potato bag planters that are right up to the rim. I haven't harvested (they haven't flowered yet), but I wondered what I could use the compost for.

yeah coz it can be such a waste otherwise. My swift potatoes have unopened flower buds on so I'm hoping for a bit of sunshine.

Flower beds, veg beds, compost heap. Not always in that order but nothing gets thrown away.
