  • Raw manure advice

    Afternoon all,

My cousin volunteers at the horse stables and so I am going to start importing horse manure and I was wondering if it is suffice to simply put it in a separate composter and compost it for 6 months then its all good to go? I presume the turning of it whilst its composting and the composting process will help reduce weeds/other pathogens if it heats up nicely?

Also, could I put it on various sections of my allotment raw if I am not going to grow anything in them for 6 or so months? I could put it under the newspaper I have laid down as a mulch which should help suppress the weeds?

    Than you for your help,

    Samuel

    Hi Samuel.

Yes, stack the manure and let it rot for six months or so.

If you want to spread it on the plot then why don't you stack it on top of the newspapers? It'll help weigh them down.

If it's really fresh you could make a hot bed with it.
