  • A question from a Potato growing virgin (well several)

    Evening all,

Have a few Q's about growing potatoes:

    1. I recieved several tubers from a kind lady and now they have roots sprouted (some are quite 'bushy' roots) - is it too late to chitin them/should I put them straight into the earth?

    2. I have a plastic pot 21 x 18 inches (W x L) - how many potato tubers can I grow within this sized container (I have planted one only) and can I grow various varieties within the same container?

    Kind regards,

    Samuel

how tall is the pot samuel, if you are growing in a pot that size 3 is about right, though height is an important factor. The taller the pot the more yield you'll get, you can plant now though I would wait until after the weekend and see if it brightens up a bit, its forecast to be a bit cool the end of the week.

The bushy bits would appear to be the potato chits, don't let these get too long 2" as they break off easily and its from these that the roots and ultimately the potatoes will grow.

Plant in about 8" of soil and cover, when the shoots come up cover over with some more soil, continue to do this until you reach the top of your pot. Ideally about 24-30" tall. An old dustbin is great for this but make sure you allow some drainage holes in the bottom.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.
