  • Question about grapes

    Hello,

I've been given a grape vine. It's about 2ft high and little grapes are forming!

I've got a massive pot to put them in and will put them against a south facing wall up a trellis.

Question is, what soil do I plant it in?

I've got bags and bags of tomato soil and flower bedding soil.

Is this ok to plant it in?

    Thanks,
    the carnage

John Innes No3 for any plants that will be in a pot for more than 2 years.

If it's only 2 ft high then I'd pinch off the grapes so the plant puts its energies into growing. My vines are in bog-standard garden soil and are doing well.

Is there no way you could put the vine into the deck and grow it up the trellis? Mine is down a tiny gap in between the wall and a concrete path, I do nothing to it and it gives me and the birds loads of grapes yearly.
If it must be in pots, garden soil through to JI would be fine but I would suggest feeding it a couple of times a year, a blob of rotted manure/compost onto the top, and let the worms do the rest.

I took a punt and just put it in a mixture of all sorts of soil. Tomato soil, general compost and other stuff! Sounds like they're happy plants generally speaking.

          Thanks all, have a badger.

I do so love those badgers...
