  • Protect Brassicas?

Im told pigeons like to eat Brassicas. Do I need to put netting over them as soon as they show above ground?

    Thanks

You need to put netting over them ASAP.........not only to protect from birds but butterflies, slugs, snails & anything else that may take a fancy to it.

I planted various brassicas this year but diidn't have time net them. No problem I thought I was going down next day and would do it then what could possibly happen in one day. Went the next day and virtually all had been eaten. Almost certain birds were responsible.

I have grown brassicas without netting before and not had a problem however if they do take an interest then you can loose the lot over night so I would net to be on the safe side. you can uncover once they are established if need be.

I always start my brassicas at home in celltrays or small pots, then plant them out on the plot when they are around 4 - 6" tall.

As soon as they are planted out they get netted.

Even with netting on, you should check the brassicas frequently for caterpillars, because some butterflies will "squat & drop" their eggs
