  • Problems with Strawberries

I am a novice gardener, and am growing strawberries for the first time. I am generally having a success, but am having a problem with about 20% of them - I would describe them as splitting, or having scabs. A picture of the unfortunate things are below (if the attachment works). Can anyone tell me what is going wrong?

They are in a raised bed, with bird netting over, and straw underneath them, and I have an automatic watering system watering them twice a day (evening and early morning).

    Any thoughts?

Sorry can't see the picture. BTW welcome to the vine.

Hi and welcome. I've copied your image into my post so that we can see it.
To me, it looks like too much water making them split their skins

I would say watering them twice a day is a bit over kill. I only water mine if there has been no rain for about 3 to 4 days, otherwise I do not bother. If they are splitting I think it's like if you over water tomatoes, they also split.

I would agree with VC. I don't water mine at all once they start to ripen. Keep the berries dry and the rot won't set in.
