  • Problems with my Mange Tout peas...

I have some quite real worries over my Mange Tout peas as they've now reached the dizzy height of almost three feet without a single flower appearing on them and not a sign of any pods. They are being grown up canes in a whopping great big plant pot, and have produced masses of foliage but virtually nothing else despite seeming quite happy and otherwise looking very, very healthy. Does anyone have any ideas what might be happening and how I might possibly correct the current problem (if a problem there be...)...

Which variety are you growing? - some grow as tall as 5ft

Ah, now you've got me. I bought them from Homebase (cue acute embarrassment at failing to have grown them from seed myself!) and didn't keep the plastic tag that came with them. Do you think they might just carry on growing and growing without producing a single Mange Tout pod? Could I be the only gardener in Britain to be growing 'Mange Rien' instead?...

No I think they'll produce pods but they will be higher up than you expected

Be patient HerbsandVeg - they'll produce flowers soon enough.

            Thank you, ladies!

Many thanks for your encouraging words, ladies. I hope I get some equally encouraging news on several of my other questions elsewhere!...

To be honest I would't necessarily trust the label from Homebase anyway - last year I bought some emergency sprouts from them that turned out to be cauliflowers when they grew . That said, what you've got will definitely be either peas or mangetout as nothing else looks like that and the tall varieties of both that I grow get a few foot tall before they flower and therefore produce pods.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Nah, they look different although I'm not sure they'd know that in DIY shops

I'm growing a tall variety of mange tout too (can't remember the variety), they're about 4 foot tall now and are only just starting to flower. Usually once they get going they're prolific, a really good value crop!
