  • Problems with my laburnum.

I've had a laburnum planted in the garden for 6 years now and it's always done well for me. It was one of my strongest looking trees. This year it hasn't come on. It has buds on it that look almost silvery, but no sign of green from them. Even my oak is doing well and it's always the last thing to come on.

I fed it some fish blood and bone stuff yesterday and watered it in well. I hope that does the trick because I don't want to lose it. I haven't taken a shaving off the bark to see if it's still alive but I'm guessing it is. To replace it with a tree of a similar size would be fairly expensive. It's about 8' tall and as thick at waist height as my wrist.

I'm on the Cavan - Meath border if that makes any difference. Any advice or opinions on what might be wrong would be appreciated.

My suspicion would be something is going on with the roots. Have you had a particularly wet winter? Any chance of some pictures, close up and the overall tree?

It was a very wet winter but it's in a spot that stays dry. I'll take photos this evening or tomorrow and put them up.

I couldn't get a good photo of the buds, I cut off one of the smaller branches and it looks like it was dead inside.

Has it been pruned in winter or spring? Looks like silver leaf disease, prune only in the summer. I hope it will be alright?

I did take the end off one branch of it very late last summer but that was all. I put stuff on the end of the branch then to seal it.

It's gone now anyway, I replaced it with a cherry tree, similar enough size, though only half as thick, and I got it for €10.
