hello, i have put 3 sprouting spuds in a poly potato sack and its outside my back door. i put 4 " of general purpose compost in the bottom and pushed the potatoes in so half are showing. as they continue to sprout you add more compost.

Potatoes are frost tender and any frost will cut down the top growth and that will be the end of your potatoes. But if you can protect the top growth - in a greenhouse, under fleece, in a very sheltered site - then yes, you can grow them now.
I grew some in buckets last year, against a south facing wall. A few nights I had to put some fleece over them . I got good potatoes very early. If you can meet their requirements it's worth a try.
I had these ready in May from a February planting.

You can plant them anytime but I suspect it will be too late now for Christmas Tatties! It's as much to do with day length as temp and would mean protecting them from frost! You would probably get a crop slightly earlier than your Spring planted earlies.........thats assuming they are early spuds you're using, but the bother of protecting them and possible expense of heating greenhouse wouldn't make it a viable proposition unless it was heated for something else!

Spuds need at least 13 weeks of frost free growth to produce any worthwhile tubers. Normally I would say forget it at this time of the year, but with the weather we've had so far what the hell, go for it. If they don't produce you've only lost the tubers and the space.

I put some salad potatoes in pots, July 8th. The foliage is huge and looks very healthy but how long should I wait before harvesting them?

I put in some shop potatoes into a big bucket in late June. Found them sprouting in the cupboard - shows how tidy I am! Must check how they're doing. The tops are growing nicely, just hope something's going on underground.
