  • Potato query

    Hi all
Bear with me I am new to this so numpty question alert!
Just got my seed potatoes delivered from T&M. Five tubers each of:
    Vivaldi
    Charlotte
    Anya
    Mayan Twighlight

I know I have to keep them cool and dark, chit them in jan and the website says plant out in March. What it doesnt tell me is wether these are earlies maincrops or what. Does this make a difference to when I should plant? And how long am I looking at before harvest for each?

Getting a mix seemed like a good idea at the time, now I wish I had just bought one sort and avoided the confusion lol

have a look at this site - it should tell you want you want to know. http://www.jbaseedpotatoes.co.uk/

I'm not sure what types yours are but the difference between earlies and maincrop etc is the length of time they take to mature. For example if you plant an early and a maincrop at the same time, you'll be able to harvest the early first.

You can google for them. I did one: Vivaldi is a 2nd early.

You could try looking on the T&M site and see what you have bought

That was the first thing I did. I do try and google before I post on here. However I couldnt find any reference to wether they were earlies or second earlies etc

            thanks for the link McBee

Turns out they are all second earlies and will take 16 weeks to harvest.

Try and get hold of a T&M potato catalogue next time - they describe them all in there - uses type etc. Alan Romans does a really comprehensive book too - Google Alan Romans. He's the potato guru for T&M but also sells seed pots and other seeds. His book is excellent for describing varieties.

Can I say thank you to McBee for the recommendation of JBA for the seed potatoes - just what I was looking for. I only want a few of different types. Much better priced than T&M as well.

You can leave charlotte in for longer as they will continue to grow . Just means you've a slightly longer cropping period.
Some of my charlottes are big enough to make chips out of ( even though they are a waxy type of spud)
