    Plastic Greenhouse

    Just wondering if the small plastic greenhouses you can get quite cheaply are actually any use?

    I was thinking of maybe trying some items from seed in them that I could transplant to the allotment at a later date.

    Would appreciate any views.

    Do you mean the "blowaways" that are about £20? Think it depends on how well you can anchor them.

      You reading my mind again VC?.........................I find them more useful inside a greenhouse or polytunnel.

        Ooh I hope not.............
        I used one of the 4 tier ones outside, before I had a GH, but tied it back to the fence and put bags of compost in the base.
        Bought that one from a garden centre but a couple that I bought recently from B&Ms (very cheap) are nowhere near as substantial. The framework doesn't fit together at all well and I wouldn't risk it outside.

          They are ok but as said previously anchor it down well and dont expect it to last more than a couple of years. I had one you could just about walk into and grew tomatoes in it , they did very well.

            Yes they are ok, I've had one for 3 years, and use it to start off my seeds in trays, and then take them up to plot when large enough. Got mine from Wilkinsons, and there is no way it can blow away as it's kind of wedged on ground floor terrace, with a balcony above it, difficult to explain, but it does the job, cost was about 20 quid or less.

              Dorothy that's what I was thinking off. Get some seed trays and start off here to transfer later. Might see if father Christmas is good to me or not :-)

                You need to think of them as coldframes, rather than greenhouses, because they don't offer any insulation at all really.

                They certainly have a use though, as a slightly sheltered place to start your seedlings off, but you must abide by the correct times for sowing, ie March onwards for hardy things, and April/May for the tenders
