    Planting advice

    Well I have to say, we were very pleasantly suprised by just how much potato's we got from an area 6ft X 5ft, and now we've dug them all up, we have a spare plot of garden doing nothing, and wondered what would be a good veg to grow at this time of year.

    As usual, any and all advice will be greatly appreciated

    I have just started planting my spring cabbage Hero. It will provide spring greens from Jan on and full cabbage later.

      Spring greens and leeks were traditionally used to follow the spuds (added in edit -because they were ready to crop and remove from the ground in time for planting the new seasons crops the following year.)

            Autumn onions will be going in my newly cleared potato beds: where I took the early spuds out in July there's alfalfa growing which I will be cutting several times as a mulch, to improve the soil. I might dig it out next year when the spuds go in, or I might leave it and just keep cutting it

              Yesterday I thought I might try onions in my potato bed (I've not had much success with onions), but I've lots of cabbage and cauliflower plants to go out soon as well, so I'm now undecided.

                Funnily enough, we planted a batch of onions, and none of them grew to much, we had to lift them as the stalks had started to whither with all the rain we've been getting, the best onions were about the size of something you'd put into a pickle jar.

                  I am putting garlic in after my spuds are up....it grows well and doesnt require too much maintenace. Hope that helps
