Like most I normally buy new seeds every year but be a poor retiree I have decided to have a go at saving my own. Do know what varieties are as I bought as plantlets but I am starting with the onion. Have got the "head" dried out but now do I save and plant the "pod" (thing that has 3 black things in) or do I need to wait for pod to split and reveal black seed. Also does anyone know where I can get a "paper bag" for drying my herb. Even here in rural BG they still sell everything in plastic.

The seeds really need to be visible before you cut the head; but it's cut now....can you see the black seeds?
I use old food containers to dry my seeds out in; you don't need paper bags if you haven't got any. Or, half fill an old jam jar with rice; put the rice in a hot oven to totally dry out and pour it back into the jam jar and seal the jar up; when totally cool - put the seed head wrapped in an old pair of tights, or a napkin - anything porous - on top of the rice and seal the jar up.....in a week or so the moisture will be removed from the seed head and it will break up much more easily.
I just lay mine in plastic trays in the greenhouse/kitchen to dry off and then break it all up and then blow away the chaff.Last edited by zazen999; 31-07-2009, 02:04 PM.

Hi I am New Here
I also am a newbie can some body help me here ref my onions I only have 1 onion growing and it has stalk/growth about 18" high x2 with white fluffy balls ( bit like dandilion Heads is this where I would find seeds for next year???
As I said I am a newbie to all this gardening veggie thing
Any Help would greatly recieved

Re the plastic bag, I met a lady who uses grease proof paper and then folds it in half and folds in the edges. I don't know if she stores them like that though or if it's just for drying. Hx"Hmm, that doesn't make much sense to me. But then, you are very small... I always liked going south. Somehow feels like going downhill."

My OH suggested sugar bags. Since we're all making chutney by the bushel there are probably quite a few around. Not always easy to get all the sugar grains out though!Comment

As TS says use a large envelope or make a bag from newspaper or A4 sheets!
