  • Ok! Now I am confused about cucumbers!

After reading through a few posts on here I have no idea if the cucumber seeds I planted are female or male and female! So do they need de-flowering or not! lol
I have the packet but it does not say. They are Marketer - can anyone help?

The Marketer Long Cucumber is an old commercial cucumber variety. The variety was originally developed by Associated Seed Growers in New Haven, Connecticut and was introduced commercially in 1942. Marketer Long was originally developed by crossing two excellent parents: Straight 8 and a variety known as Vaughn.

Marketer Long produces a very heavy yield of long, smooth green cucumbers. The cucumbers are "burpless" and excel in quality.

Resistant to powdery mildews and can be used in the greenhouse.

Matures early - only 45 to 50 days!

From the above speil, I would assume that this variety will produce both male and female flowers and should be grown accordingly. Hope this helps.

I just found that one too, but as I read onto different sources I have found mixed advice - some say to remove some say to leave so cross pollonation can occur, just one thing......how do you tell the male from female???

        Answered my own question lol:

        Q. How do you tell the difference between the male and female cucumber bloom?

        A. Female blooms have small immature cucumbers located directly behind the petals. Male blooms do not have immature fruit.

Glad you asked this question Donnalwat. I am growing Marketer too but a lot of grapes are growing Marketmore (which stupidly was what I thought I was picking up!!) and my seed packet wasn't very informative.
I am growing some inside and some outside so hopefully will have at least a few for my plate. Sanjo
