    New Greenhouse - itching to get started...

    Hi again all, as usual i'm back for advice!

    Just bought my first ever greenhouse, it should be all glassed up and ready to go by tuesday. I had already laid the concrete base, the greenhouse is assembled and stood on ready for fixing - am presently just cleaning all glass before refitting.

    What I want to know is:

    What veg can I sow now that I will see results from pretty quickly?

    What veg seeds can I start off for planting outside in spring?

    Can I grow herbs on in the greenhouse then transplant outside once established?

    Hi! I've got salad growing in mine that I started a week or so ago and I've started off some chard that will go out soon. Herbs can be started off for the window sill over winter.
    I'm also trying some flowering stuff for the spring- pansies and geraniums(not the pelargonium ones) I think it's a of give it a go! Will you heat?

      Not too much to start off at the moment, but a greenhouse is great for overwintering tender(ish) plants. Also will get you off to a flying start in the spring. Are you going to heat the g/house or not? You should be able to grow mixed salad leaves, no problems, specially if you want to pick as baby leaves.

        Hoping not to heat as will be very expensive.. but not totally ruled out as an option yet.

          Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm, December is probably the best time to start some seedlings off. I know this sounds daft and obvious but, read the rear of the seed packets, they all tell how early to start and what temp etc and so forth.

          As for heating, yeah, it will cost a bloody fortune to heat a decent sized green house over the winter BUT, all you need to do is keep the frost away. IN our 25 foot long by 10 foot wide poly tunnel, we use a single chimney paraffin heater, costs us about £12 a month if we keep it going 27/7. If we only light it when frost is coming, the two litre tank lasts us about two weeks!

              Oh nuts, another typo..................yeah, Horsy's in Wareham sells hours on a monthly basis for 3/6 a go.
