  • my runner bean question

I bought some runnner bean plants and planted them all at the same time, the thing is one of them have grown very quick and is now half way up of the cane, yet the others have either hardly grown or not at all.
I have also planted some runner bean seeds which have all grown at different speeds.
    What am i doing wrong?

Why assume that you're doing something wrong? Maybe you've planted out or sown your seeds at different depths and they're taking different times to grow to the surface. They all need to establish good root systems before they can head up the cane, some of the plants may have been more established than others.
I wouldn't worry about it. They'll catch up.

      Suzan,

Six runner beans all planted at the same time, in root trainers side by side, all potted on at the same time in the same compost, now reside side by side against a fence. Result From 6ft high to 3 ft high don't worry as the weather picks up they will soon catch up.

Think yourself lucky, I sowed six runner bean seeds on the 1st June and as yet... Nothing... I expected them to have germinated by now but the weather has been too wet and cold... I may have to try again by planting in the propagator!

Everything seems to have come to a standstill except the spuds during this weather spell.

I've had to put mine in the heated prop to get them to germinate ~ in JUNE, ffs

One of my runner beans is a good 18 inches taller than its mates sown at the same time but the other plants are pretty sturdy so I'm not too concerned. One of the older gardeners on my site advise succession sowing for runner beans so yours should be OK especially when the weather settles down hopefully/eventually this year.

I have just sown my third lot of runners.. the first dozen went out just as that hot week started and are between 10 inch and 3 foot high... planted the second lot today and they are all diffent size. But, i do grow 4 diffferent varieties just in case one variety fails. I have about 30 canes and can crop right up to december if its mild. I also save seed in a glut year.
But... Climbing french beens are a dead loss this year.
