  • Mushrooms in my Tattie Bags

I just earthed up today and covered the phenomenally lovely growth (which incidentally has blown me away for 1 month's growing)

while me, my Darling Wife and Son were involved in this task, we noticed a number of tiny mushrooms and some other types of fungus growing in the compost.

I just went ahead and carried on but wondered if i should be concerned or whether it was normal.

the compost is general multi-purpose - some from b&q and some from local garden centre
the b&q compost I have to say had a lot of rocks and lumps in it
i was not impressed with the quality at all

so is it normal and ok to have fungus in with the tatties?

I had a load in my sweetcorn which were in paper pots, they developed a white fur, then little yellow mushrooms appeared, which then went black and died all within 24 hours.

They looked vile, like something out of a horror movie.

I presume if the conditions are right and the spore are in the soil, they will grow.

Not that unusual to find some mushrooms appear, some mpc is partly recycled mushroom compost I believe. The thing I would worry about is whether you are watering the tatties too much, and that is why the fungi are doing so well.
There's no point reading history if you don't use the lessons it teaches.

i think it might be all the rain
i've only watered them a couple of times
about once every week of two so far if they've looked particularly dry

If the conditions are right - damp, warmish and the spores are present - mushrooms will grow anywhere. Last year however we did try to cultivate some from one of those "mushroom growing boxes" you can buy and not one of them grew.

Wierd, I've been getting loads of mushrooms growing in a variety of my seedling pots, let my mushroom box has been on the go for 6 weeks and not a single one!

                that is weird isn't it
mind you the types popping up everywhere are probably not the types you'd eat!
maybe the eating ones are a bit more difficult to cultivate?
