  • Mould on Loo Rolls

Having read loads of tips on the forum about using loo rolls I decided I'd give it a try this year. I've got cauliflower and peppers growing in them the moment. My question is though will the mould that is covering the loo rolls damage the seedling plants?

    Hi Shelley,

Mine have all got mould aswell, its not has harmful as it looks - and shouldn't damage your seedlings.

Once its planted the mould will die off.

i'm sure someone on here once said if you microwave the rolls before use it kills the mould off- i tried it this year but it hasn't worked for me although i was only brave enough to leave them in for 20 secs as they looked like they were beginning to smoke!

I like a bit of mould... makes me feel like a proper gardener

My tip: if you're going to give any seedlings away, do it before the mould appears - or wrap the loo roll in summat... my neighbour looked most disconcerted last year when I presented her with some sweet peas in mould-speckled tubes...

          Doesn't do any harm.

Glad to hear this, my loo rolls are growing a lovely fur coat!

What a relief, I was beginning to think I'd wasted my time. I have not yet put any loo rolls in the microwave but will try this method at the weekend and hopefully won't set the house on fire in the process. Thanks for all your replies I feel a lot better continuing to use them now and save a bit of money as well.

The microwave thing didn't work for me. I forgot to do the first lot anyway but the second lot I blasted for a minute on high. Both sets now have about the same amount of mould on them

I nuked about twenty, then found that I could fit 28 in the seed tray, so I left the last eight untreated.

The untreated ones now have a couple of delicate little toadstools growing at the base!
