  • This might be a daft question...

    Hi all,

I am building raised beds for my new plot which will be layered with cardboard and manure in the first instance, then filled. I am just looking at ordering some dumpty bags to fill them but have got myself confused about whether I want compost or topsoil! My gut says topsoil as its going on top of everything else but is this right?? The veggie options are all compost but would this be instead of manure?

    Thanks in advance!

Personally I'd go for a mix of the two but that depends on the depth of the beds and what's underneath , for shallow beds up to 6 ins deep, I'd go for compost or rotted manure which in the case of manure can be laid over card board and left for the worms to work in over winter with no digging required.manure is cheaper ( or even free!)this will work fine if there is soil underneath. For deep beds on top of concrete or a useless substrate a mix of topsoil and compost or manure would be a better solution, bear in mind it will sink over time and need topping up. Make sure any manure is amino pyramid free .
