I had one a few years ago, They are difficult to keep growing. They need to be planted in the garden, but they need very very deep soil.
I was lucky enough to live in the same place as the mass production of liquorice (pontefract west yorks) You dont live too far away so you may be lucky.
Mine did ok, but they are slow growing and i thought mine was dead at one point because it was just a bunch of twigs that smelt good, but as it happened it was fine, just didnt do much very fast.
The main prob is soil depth if you can get past that then you should be ok.

      Liquorice plant.

What do you do with them when you've got them? I remember as a child chewing Liquorice roots. lovely taste, stained you mouth, and Mommy got very angry if she knew I had had some.

        I googled:

Liquorice will grow in any well drained soil, but grows best on sandy soil near streams.

It will not flourish on clay.
It thrives in a sunny position.
Any stones (in the soil) must be removed as roots can grow up to 4 metres in length Sweet Liquorice - Glycyrrhiza glabra
