  • Leaving roots in the ground

    Hi

I have started cutting back plants that have stopped fruiting, such as peas & beans, and have cut down the base of the stem, so that there are 1 - 2 inches showing above ground.

My question is this - does it benefit the soil to leave the roots in the ground so that they rot in situ, or should I dig them out an compost them?

    Thanks

it benefits the soil to leave them there because their nodules fix nitrogen, so if you leave them decompose in the ground, you've added nitrogen without doing anything
