  • Large raised bed

SOrry if this is in wrong forum.

I am looking to put in a large raised bed in the garden, I would like a 3m x 2m plot and want a depth of around 50 cm. Does anyone know the best place (and price) where I could get one? I am based in Herefordshire and so would find it difficult to pick up from too far away.
    Thanks for any input.

I moved this so people can see it

Raised beds are very easy to make if you have some wood and nails

ask your local scaffolding company and they are normally happy to sell or give away old boards

Welcome to the vine Chris. It's all personal how you want it to look, what materials to use, plastic, wood, scaffold boards, pallets broken up, decking. It's all a matter of choice. Use the excellent search facility at the top of the page and you will find lots of info on raised beds, in fact you may find more info than you need.

I used a local timber merchant - explained what I wanted, I ended up getting some 12' x 6" x 2" lengths of tanalised timber.. I think they were around £10 each.

If it was to be permanent and 1/2 metre high it may be worth investing in brick/stone/block work?

Woodwork to the dimensions you state would need to be very substantial and well supported to withstand the forces created by the filling!

                  Depth or height?
If depth, can't you use the soil you already have? (assuming you have some). Filling that big a bed with bought topsoil will cost you an arm and a leg

From what I read TS, I took it as 3mts x 2mts x 50cm deep or high *(same thing from what I see).........like you say though, it's a lot of compost.

My latest rased beds, i got cheap soil £35 per ton bag in january, i left it in the bags to grow in , no need for a raised bed to build, i just got a great deep growbag with each ton ,
i was planning on building wood fence around them in a row, but instead i made a big planter out of the sides,i cut small holes in the sides and popped bedding plants and strawberry plants in the sides, other plants in the top

Great idea starloc if you can get hold of compost at that price, I thought the average price was around £70 a ton.

Im not sure, but i think it was this company (my brother ordered it), there in liverpool , price was including delivery so would put price down as were in liverpool, they ask postcode when you get on the site so price will probably change for different areas, also changes the more you buy

Hmm I paid £80 I think for 2.5 tonnes of top soil mixed with compost delivered in South Wales..

Mind you, it did have glass, plastic, car number plates, metal, rubble, plastic and I dread to think what else in too. /me won't cheap out on soil/compost ever again
