  • I've been impatient!

Like one or two other beginners I've got a little impatient and decided to start sowing in my raised bed this weekend. I sowed 2 varieties of carrot, radishes, leeks, and onion and garlic sets, as well as lettuce in containers. I've also transplanted my sweet peppers and am hardening off (but bringing in at night).

In my defence this week has been good in NI, plus we tend to get our better weather in April/May.

I would appreciate anyone's thoughts on what I've done.

Most of what you've sown should be fine - they're hardy enough.

Just don't be putting tender stuff out yet ... squash, runners, French beans etc. Wait until after your last frost (May)

he he he, tisn't just beginners that get impatient
Seems like you've been impatient with the right stuff so far though Your pepper plant will be ok outside as long as the temp is 10°c or more, if it's much below that, keep it on the windowsill indoors.

Know how you feel. I would cover my seedlings with fleece or one of those plastic cloches (sp?) you can buy if you think the temperature is going to drop too much. I lost all my early onions to frost last year, so am being extra (probably too) carefull this year.

How glad I am not to get a sound bollocking from anyone!

I am being pretty commonsense about things - I am keeping my peppers in a cold frame by day and bringing in at night. The other pots I have are being left in the cold frame overnight (after i have already started hardening off a few weeks ago). Am also putting a fleece over my raised bed at night until the warmer weather kicks in.

Self control -what's that? Despite what the books tell you it's good to 'push the envelope'

Well, phleeps, I've had my plot for 3 or 4 years now, and still consider myself a beginner
You just have to try things out for yourself and see if they work or not, it's all part of the fun. What is an expert anyway? Someone who's made more mistakes than you!
