  • Identification advice please?! Pink / red furry stem??

Hi, I've spotted a lot of seedlings spread over my dads garden. I need some help identifying them before I dig them up to use (for a freinds garden and maybe as an indoor plant?!).
They have come from a small tree he cut down earlier this year. It was onyl about 8-10feet tall. Had a pinky red furry stem / trunk. Fronds of leaves, long, narrow, serrated leaves. Has obvisouly seeded itself around. I think I remember it having bulbous dark maroon fruit / cones?!

Anyway, here is a couple of pictures of the seedlings, any ideas?! (hope the pictures work?!)

You gave a very clear description kt

If the tree was cut down, it's more likely the new plants are growing from the roots of the old tree. It suckers (pops up new plants from any point where the roots are near the surface) easily. Best way to deal with them is pull, snap or cut them off.

I agree - Sumac. It spreads everywhere - underground!! Can be invasive.
Don't think its suited to being a pot plant on someone's window sill

Ha! I thought I'd given a useless random description and u'd all ask 4more info!
Hmm so no good 4a pot plant &I don't want it in my own garden if its invasive &hs rhizomes cz prob poisonous to pets too. Wonder whether it would still b ok 4my friends garden? She is trying to fill her garden as it had been empty&dead since she moved in about 5 years ago. It was a new build so think the ground is just rubbish. So I was thinking easy to grow stuff&stuff tht survives in my garden (only live down the road).

Thanks 4 identifying! &I'll let my dad know about the invasive spreading roots as it's all around his veg patches!

Now it's odd that the RHS say all parts are poisonous, 'cos native Americans used to make a drink from the ripe berry cones and some Americans still do

Is this the spice 'Sumac' which I buy from Arabic stores here ( a ground red berry)?
                    ....it has a lemony flavour???

I thought it only thrived in desert conditions? .....perhaps it's something else???

Oh- yum!!! ...sounds like the same plant!!!

I first came across it in the '80's when I was given the powder from a middle eastern Dr. It was really hard to find in the UK as the bushes grew in the desert between Iran and Iraq and it was too dangerous to pick the berries during the war.

Looks like it's much easier to buy the powder these days.
                          Superb as a lemon substitute!

I'm now wondering where I can buy a plant of my own from!!
