  • How to use heated propagators

Am i correct in thinking that the correct way to use a heated propagator is to put the seed in compost, put it in the propagator and once the seed has broken the surface take it out and put the next batch in? Its just required for germination?

Yes - because once the seedling is showing it needs light

You can use it that way for sure but if the plants when germinated benefit from continuous bottom heat, they can be used to provide that as well. Onions and leeks being cases in point

Thanks, makes sense. Most of what i plan to grow this year, which the exception of garlic and onions is starting off in pots so a propagator might be a good investment as they will be in an unheated conservatory.

It will really depend onhow early you want your crops to mature. In our climate, onions need drying off early before the autumn wet weather comes just as an example so you want to be able to lift them early. Common sense mostly but do a google search on thecrop you are thinking about or ask the specific question here.

Do you need one with a thermostat or will one of the cheaper ones suffice?

The cheap ones have a non adjustable thermostat built in. I use a home made heated bench with a variable thermostat but I constantly check the temperature using a soil thermometer to make sure my plants aren't frozen or frazzled.

Well I've just sourced one for free from someone at work, it pays to chat gardening over tea break!!

Will keep the wife happy as she can have the airing cupboard back again.
