  • How should or do I use capillary matting & a question on leeks.

Ive managed to acquire loads of capillary matting from work, I know its expencive so jumped at the chance and took loads. (anyone near me who wants any youre more than welcome to some) Ive never used it before so wondered what I should do with it, how long do I leave watering etc?

Also onto the leeks, Ive got musslebrough leeks it says to sow in march but if I sow now in the green house do you recon by the time march comes (recommended sow time) they will be pencil thick and I can just plant them out after hardening off?

    Thanks guys

Sorry this is a bit late but last year I started (my second batch, first lost to storm that toppled greenhouse) in early March and they were pencil thick end of May, IIRC. I started the first batch early Feb. A handy trick I found on the internet is to use a polystyrene box (like the kind that the greengrocery has that leeks come in!) so they can get nice and established without getting root-bound.

If you are going to use capillary matting the surface that it is on must be absolutely level or the water will all run to the lowest end. The other thing is that all the pots need to be the same size or the larger ones will soak up more water than the smaller ones. It's not the easiest thing to use.

funny enough I have a massive one from the shop, if anyone ever needs one in the future ask at places that sell fish as we get all the bags of living fish in them. Must be because the heat is retained.

I think VC has sent off the leek seeds I asked for so as soon as I get them from the PO i will sow them.

        Thanks guys x

I seem to have trouble editing.

I pulled up the video I had seen before:

              Canny vid there.

I grew my leeks in a tray last year, they were ok. Think I will try this way this year, defo!

glad you enjoyed the vid. it worked pretty well for me. was nice not to feel cramped both with respect to number of leeks and getting root bound.
