  • How to plant direct?

I put about 3inch of leaf mulch over my allotment over the winter.

    Do I plant through it?
Or do I dig in the leaf mulch?

The leaf is keeping back the weeds.

    Any hints would be great

I think I would plant through the leaf mould but make sure for brassicas they have their roots in some firm ground below. I'd be surprised if it is still 3" deep though.

Do you mean plant (as in putting in small plants) or sow (as in putting seeds in)?

Just push the mulch aside and plant into the soil underneath. If you plant into the mulch itself, you risk the plants drying out (as rain won't always get through the mulch).

I sink a few cut-off pop bottles around the place, and water into those, rather than soaking the surface ~ it's more efficient with time & water, and more effective because water goes to the roots rather than evaporating
