  • how hot is cayenne chilli?

Got some seed from a grape but not sure how hot it will be. Am labelling the packet.

    Anyone know?

    Thanks

    Er yeah!
They are fairly hot, but not eye-watering. I chop a whole one into a soup, and it's fine.

      Great thanks

I like to know to be forewarned before I put it in my food, I usually use OH as a tester! he likes sthem hotter than me.

I couldn't remember the name of the scale thing they are measured on to check it.

Chile Pepper Heat Scoville Scale - Home Cooking

        Quite hot.

I use cayenne pepper regularly from t'shops and it only takes a little to really heat up a dish.

and another VERY inclusive chart, although again, 'medium' is relative.
            ChilePlants.com - Chile Chart

this is a good one cos its 'sortable' and has ...........well as many varieties as a chilli nut could wish for listed.

It also depends on how long they've been on the plant, ie the riper they are the hotter they are so early season ones aren't as hot although you sometimes get a rogue one which hits you harder than expected.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

PW - i'm not being rude.

If it's a fresh chilli, I lick mine before I chop and if it's all clear the whole lot goes in. If not, then I judge the potential effects, and then kick myself for not wearing gloves. Then I try not to rub my eyes, which makes me think I've got itchy eyes, and usually put half in and save the other half for the next day.

it is a method that has always worked for me, almost as well as feeding one to a child and watching closely for reactions ( for this one to work you have to bet them a fiver they can't eat a whole one )
