  • How close is too close?

Hi there again. I have just come across companion planting. I have put in garlic and onions and garlic in different places because it suited but I didnt know that peas and beans really dont like them and i had planned to put them next to the garlic. I am limited as to where I can put my peas and beans because of the wind. so long story short how close is considered bad and would a row of radishes or something small inbetween help? thanks

I think alot of it is trial and error. I did a veggie bed in my garden border couple years ago. Runners at the back on the trellis. Couple kale plants here and there and all the onions, marigolds, radish, nasturiums and lettuces i jut bunged in and let them fight it out. There was no order but it looked really lovely.

I've just spent a while looking on tinternet to see if there is any explanation....some say plant the garlic near to deter pests, others say they will reduce the bean/ pea yield, others say the garlic will be smaller.

      Bit confusing isn't it?

What would I do?....my thoughts are that beans and peas need rich soil and garlic does better in drier conditions not shaded by other plants.

I'd just leave them as they are and if you are happy about the produce at the end of the year then brill!
None of us garden in perfect conditions...we just have to make the most of what we have!

I wouldn't worry...I need to concentrate on making sure the frost/ drought/ beasties don't get to my crops before I do!!

Thankyou guys. I think you're right, there is so much info out there and I couldn't find anything definitive. This is my first year and i'll be happy with a carrot as big as my little finger lol. I think this year is just a case of trying to grow everything I like and see what grows well and take it from there.
Ha ha I have decided to try chitting my peas because we have alot of mice that Im sure would love to get their hands on them.

I alway grow beans and garlic/onions in the same bed and they don't seem to mind. I think it's a bit of a myth to be honest.

My personal experience last year was that the peas and beans were fine but the garlic was a teeny single bulb that went nowhere. They were planted within a foot of each other, with the garlic bordering the rows.

I moved the garlic bulbs to a new bed last December and they are now thriving.
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it.
If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

My two-penny-worth is that crop rotation is more important than companion planting, so I focus on planting like-crops in the same area; that way the ones that want manure get that, and the ones that don't don't. Watering is either "plenty" or "Not much". Nutrients used by one crop are then different for the follow-on crop and hopefully the bugs in one crop have died out 4 years later when that crop returns to that part of the plot.

I don't know if companion planting helps / is a detriment to yield, however I have read lots about Onions / Garlic keeping Carrot Fly away from Carrots, but I am very sceptical that it is 100% effective, and I find that even the damage from one or two carrot flies is very annoying so I put Enviromesh over mine (and NOT just a wall around "because carrot fly does not fly more than 2' high "- I don't care to test that theory because I find that even the damage from one or two carrot flies is annoying )
