How best do we take cuttings of ivy?

    How best do we take cuttings of ivy?

    My lovely girlfriend has asked me to enquire as to whether anyone could advise us how to take 'growable' cuttings of ivy. We currently have it growing on one side of the garden (just on the wall around a recess in which we have our garden bench) and want to introduce up a facing red brick wall. Would it involve the use of hormone rooting powder, and how long might it take to root and 'take' to a degree where we might be able to train it up the wall in the manner of our current 'setting' around our bench? Any ideas, anyone?...

    If you rootle around the bottom of your ivy, you may find there are rooted bits that you can detach.
    Or take cuttings, put them in a glass of water and sit back and watch them grow roots.
    Don't ask me how long it takes as its a while since I've done any!

      I know it's a choice thing - but have you ever considered something like clematis or some other climbing plant which provides a bit of colour and grows faster ??

        You're mad Herbs. I'm desperately trying to stop the bloody stuff climbing the walls of the cottage I live in.

        It damages the brickwork and joints.

                What!!!! I haven't seen this month's mag
                Anyway - back to the ivy question!! I have a couple of quite dainty variegated ivies that are quite attractive - but the big thug of a common ivy I'm trying to eradicate constantly
                If its somewhere that you're going to sit - why not honeysuckle and jasmine? Their perfume is glorious at the moment

                  Hmm, we might just consider those two, too. I'll put all these suggestions to her when I phone her a little later on...
