  • Help - what ate the beetroot tops?

    I wandered out into the garden this morning to find that the tops have disappeared from my beetroot plants. There's virtually nothing left: just a few leaf ribs.

    This has happened in the last 48 hours.

    I did see some sparrows pecking about in the veg patch the other day. Could they be the culprits?

          I used to construct a cat's cradle of black sewing thread over my beets when I sowed them direct: now I sow them into modules and plant them out when they're bigger than a sparrow's gob
