  • Help...too ambitious?!

After five years as a "grown-up" (ie not living with parents, married with two kids) I finally have a flat which has some outside area, 3 balconies one of which I am attempting to grow things on. The balcony is approximately 3'x4/5' and 10 metres away from a canal. I have on it a four tier plastic greenhouse which I am currently sheltering some plants which I only planted mid-march and a tomato greenhouse which I bought from Wilko. From Sunrise to mid-day it gets full sun and then shade for the rest of the day.

I have one Kenyan Dwarf Bean plant, two Marketmore cucumbers, four Rio Grande tomatoes, three and a half Dorset Nagas (which are tucked up inside at night with the kids), 1 Honeydew Melon and two sunflower plants (planted by my two evergrowing toddlers). Am I being over ambitious? How do I continue growing these plants...what type of pots, soil, fertilisers, any trailing devices?

Sorry for going on but having got this far I don't want anything to go...Help!!

Not really about your post, but your user name. Its not a good idea to use your email addy as a username, as the spam bots will soon (if not already) pick it up and your get flooded with spam! I know its yahoo, but it gets annoying trying to find a real email in amongst spam

    Just trying to help

Don't know if you can... Maybe admin could do it, but not sure how you get hold of them

might be easier to just set up a completely new profile with a new user name

I've just e-mailed the 'webmaster', see how that goes. I am ashamed to admit that in my previous life (before marriage and kids) I was an IT teacher lecturing on correct internet usage! Now I'm more familiar with...Igglepiggle and co.

As to your plants, keep doing what you're doing. As they get bigger, they'll need bigger pots. Multi-purpose compost is fine, choose peat-free if you care about the peat bogs.

Container plants need a bit of a feed when they get bigger. Make your own from comfrey leaves (there are loads of posts, do a search for recipes etc), or get some tomato feed.

Your container plants will get very thirsty, so put a saucer under each container, and possibly mix some water-retaining gel into the compost (or shredded washing up sponges)
