Default Harvesting Walnuts

Hi - can anybody please help me - I have a walnut tree which is laden with fruit. I have collected some of them and am wondering what I should do now. They have a green hull which is very difficult to remove - do I need to remove it straight away.

Can you also tell me how I store the walnuts - and perhaps if I should wait until they fall or try and collect them manually.

It does seem such a shame to leave them all to the squirrels but was wondering if it would be too much work to harvest them myself.

Many thanks,
Judy
