Hanging baskets

Nothing wrong with wicker - unless you hate the site of them. My friend grows some of hers in wicker. Not sure what she lines it with tho'. Mine are in old fashioned wire baskets with a liner in. They seem OK and are getting plenty of flowers.

thanks for the reply.
it's not that I don't like wicker, I just tought it would be cheaper to get plastic ones... and I think wicker basket are more for flowers and decoration in the garden. I am planning to hang mine in the greenhouse, so I don't need or want anything fancy... ;-)

but as I cannot seem to find plastic one, I guess wire basket and liner would be my next option... thanks for the suggestion.

I got two 10" ones at Poundland..�1 and a bargain. They're the wire ones, but I plan on lining them with dried grass clippings and some compost bag - saw in on Gardener's World.

For tomatoes you really need the biggest basket you can find or you'll never be able to keep them sufficiently watered - i use 16" metal ones lined with coir liners and a disc of plastic cut from a fertiliser bag to form a reservoir at the bottom.

^^^^^^^Agreed I use wicker baskets shaped like an upside down dunce's cap, that gives me a good 12 inch of depth and I still have to be careful with watering.

Helpful info as I shall be growing tumbling toms in hanging baskets for the first time later this year, no such thing as old news on here, I often search through old posts for ideas.

I do hanging baskets for the outside of my house (ten of them to be exact) watered by a micro watering system with a battery operated timer. Was pleased to see they came to the same conclusion it was best to cut plastic bags to create a reservoir in the bottom of the basket. I was shown to do this by my late mum as she was the hanging basket expert and taught me everything I know.

I did notice though that it was an old thread.
