  • growing dog rose from seed?

Has anyone grown dog rose from seed?
I tried last year but nothing came through. I thought it was classed as a weed so would grow easily.

I've got more seed this year and wanting to try again.
    Any advice?

    thanks guys

I only know a couple of things about growing roses from seed, and I've never done it myself.

The first is that the fleshy red hip contains a growth inhibitor that stops the seed from germinating, so you have to remove the seeds from the hip completely.

The other thing is the seeds need a period of chilling, I think at least 3 months - not freezing, just cold like in the fridge, before they will germinate.

Maybe if you sowed the seeds in a pot, and then sink the pot outside in the ground, and hope for a cold winter?

    Endless wonder.

aren't dog roses one of those that need to go through somethings digestive tract to germinate? Sure I read that somewhere.

Dog roses are considered wild and weedy because they take so easily from layering...just take a stem and plant it horizontally for quickest results....unless you are determined to grow one from seed on principle?
