  • Green manure

Am I too late to sow a green manure on my patch now to then dig it in next year? If I still have time, which varieties would be suitable?

    Many thanks

I'd say you're a month too late to get anything to grow now.
If you sow too late in the year, it won't germinate or grow much until spring, which is when you want to be digging it in.

I used T&M's autumn green manure mixture - not sure what it has in it because I daftly threw away the packet!

I think as TS says, you're a bit late for green manure. What about putting in some broad beans and then you'd have some produce as well as releasing some nitrogen into your soil?

Ive never grown broad bean before. When would they likely be ready to harvest? Considering I would need to buy the seed and germinate first. The ground needs to be available for the rapid growth of pumpkin vines in June.

If you don't like eating broad beans they can still be used as a green manure! You just need to dig em in before they flower!

I like eating broad beans but judging by the smell that comes from the pan when they are cooking, I somehow don't fancy drinking wine made from them!

Each to there own though TS!
