Hello, I need some advice please, I planted my garlic about 4 weeks ago (x12 of them), first time I've planted garlic, so far only 5 of them have sprouted about an inch above ground now. What should I do about the others, leave them and hope they all sprout or dig them out and see whats what? 5 bulbs won't be enough for us next year, I could plant another row just not sure. Last year I started my onion, garlic and shallots off in modules (with even the garlic proud of the soil as the module aren't deep enough for garlic). When the onions sprouted within a week in that hot October weather we had yet the garlic did nothing apparent, I thought they were at risk of rotting instead of growing. However when I planted them out after a month, despite still not much to see on top, the garlic had rampant root balls - totally going for it. Don't assume that because you can't see it, nothing is happening
If they don't sprout in spring, you can plant more then anyway.
NB this year has been much cooler than last year - I have very few sprouts from onions or garlic this year - prob around 5% are showing (with the exception of Paris White, a salad onion that apparently really likes winter!). I'm confident they'll be concentrating on root growth for now anyway.Proud member of the Nutters Club.

If your weather is owt likes ours Mary the ground may be a tad hard to plant more but you could always put some in modules ready to plant out next spring.

Phew thanks everyone, it was just a worry that 5 out of the row of 12 have come up (not together or next to each other), yes too late to plant as had our first serious frost last night so will wait until spring, thanks again, Mary.Comment

Some of my garlic hasnt come up yet - planted beginning november, so I wouldnt worry just yet!

Have just got back from lottie & need some grapevice...........My garlic which is in modules in a gravel tray in the greenhouse looks ok.........as it is the first time I have grown them this way my question is regarding the roots, my instinct was to trim them but thought I would get some grapevice first. Thanks.
