I've planted out cabbage, leeks, carrot, parsnip, peas and beans but I want to know when I start spring cabbage & anything else that will take us over winter - I don't want to be too short sighted in my first year!

I sow about 50 seeds of anything I think will come in handy later on in an 8 inch pot and transplant direct from this.
As a guide, I have at present pots of Tuscan kale, curly kale and another very leafy fodder kale I'm growing for the chooks. Primo cabbage,Kilaton cabbage, cauli, 3 lots of different sprouts (we like sprouts) calabrese.Still to sow are PSB and both round and pointy spring cabbage.
Apart from brassicas I have leeks (2 types) loads of onions including long red florence, Golden bear and two types of shallot from seed.
Still to sow direct are lots more swedes,mooli, turnips (three varieties) beetroot, french beans (direct sown) and lots of annual flowers soon to be planted out!
All the above should help to keep the beds productive 52 weeks of the year.........hopefully!

Yes, I was thinking about this. I have got most of my summer stuff planted but do not have seeds for much else as yet. I fancy some spring cabbage and could start this in pots in the greenhouse. Is any time good for sowing this?BumbleB

I have never grown spring cabbage, so don't know what I'm talking about here but have checked Dr Hessayon Vegetable Expert book. The advice there is to sow spring cabbage july/aug and plant in final position sept/oct. Sounds perfect to take over from summer crops!Comment

I am planning autumn leeks, red cabbage, spring cabbage, spuds (from my earlies), autumn king carrots, winter salad onions, turnips and caulis. Although if I get to a gc, their will probably be more!!AKA AngieComment

That's a useful link Twosheds. I never grown cabbages over winter, but hope to try this year.
A good beginning is half the work.
