Personally I love my enviromesh but it is blooming expensive. Some people on here get on well with debris netting but I think it shades the plants too much although it is a lot cheaper. Basically you need something fine enough so that small insects can't get through so normal netting isn't much use (although it will keep birds off if you suffer with them). Can't remember where I got mine from now, definitely on the internet and seem to remember shopping around a lot to find the best value. One tip worth remembering is that the rolls of it are far better value than the ready packaged sort. Same stuff but you might get raggy edges which I don't see as a problem.

And yes, you need to keep it above the plants otherwise butterflies etc will lay their eggs through the netting onto the leaves below and you'll end up with the dreaded catepillars anyway which is never good.

i have just found this on Gardening-natually.co.uk

"Crops may be covered all the year round from planting right up to harvest. Lay flat over the bed allowing enough slack for the growth of the crop, bury the edges or secure with pegs ensuring there are no gaps."

it seems to be suggesting that i dont need uprights - would this be a good idea?

From what i understand enviromesh is best.I'm using debris netting as the size I will need to keep the sods of my PSP and brussels makes the price prohibative

I have debis netting in 2m and 3m widths, 3m is far better as is gives you greater height.Yes it does shade but the brassics tend not to mind a bit of shade,well the ones I'm growing dont

For keeping cabbage whites off I'd say no.I've seen crops done like this ruined

As I mentioned above, it depends on what you are netting for. If it's to keep the cabbage whites off then you need to keep a gap between your plant and the netting as if they touch,the butterflies can rest on the plant and lay eggs through the netting. If you're just netting for birds etc then you don't really need such expensive mesh.

The above seems to me to be the way to use fleece not enviromesh?

Enviromesh is usually supported away from the plant!

I've bought a load of voile net curtain material to use on my brassicas next year. Advice on the forum is that it's very good, but I can't confirm this until the end of next season.

Sadly it blew down!

As I had suspected; after all the voile and wood supports were put over it it was too heavy given the thin diameter plastic pipe. Will buy some thicker stuff and give it another go one weekend soon.

I never got round to completing the ends as it blew down after about 3 weeks and I never got the chance. Like I say, will re-build with corrections soon and add the ends.

So instead of being a tunnel cloche it turned into a tunnel kite!
